Srinagar, Jun 26 (PP): Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday reassured the public about the robust arrangements for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, even as the number of pilgrims registering for the pilgrimage continues to rise after a brief decline. Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, LG Sinha also confirmed that Muharram processions will adhere to the established routes followed in previous years.
Highlighting the efforts to ensure a smooth pilgrimage, the LG stated that over 85,000 pilgrims have reconfirmed their participation in the Amarnath Yatra after an initial dip in registrations. “While the recent incident caused some hesitation, we are now seeing renewed enthusiasm among pilgrims. The numbers are expected to grow further in the coming days,” he said.
He added that the previous year saw an unprecedented footfall of 5.12 lakh pilgrims – the highest in over a decade. This year, the administration has implemented key measures to enhance the experience, including widening pathways on both the Baltal and Chandanwari-Pahalgam routes to 12 feet, addressing safety concerns and improving accessibility.
To prioritize safety, helicopter services have been suspended. “Only a small fraction of pilgrims, about 8%, used helicopter services in the past. Given safety challenges, the suspension will have minimal impact while ensuring a secure journey,” he explained.
The LG also announced infrastructure upgrades, including permanent accommodation facilities at the Baltal and Nunwan base camps and expanded medical services, with 100-bed hospitals established at both locations. He emphasized that these measures aim to improve the pilgrimage experience despite weather-related delays in construction.
Further, he highlighted the implementation of a Zero Landfill policy for the second consecutive year, in collaboration with the Shrine Board and local authorities. Advanced monitoring systems, including RFID tracking and 24×7 surveillance from a command center, have also been deployed to ensure the Yatra’s efficiency and safety.
Security arrangements for the Yatra have been bolstered with a multi-tier system involving the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army, and Central Armed Police Forces. Service providers have undergone rigorous verification to maintain security standards, while improved convoy systems have streamlined pilgrim movement.
LG Sinha expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by locals to the Yatris, calling it unmatched in the country. He also praised the collaborative efforts of various departments in making the Yatra safer and more efficient.
When asked about Muharram processions, the LG affirmed that they would follow the traditional routes established last year, ensuring the sanctity of the event while maintaining law and order.
The administration’s extensive preparations underline its commitment to ensuring the success of both the Amarnath Yatra and Muharram observances, reflecting a balance between spiritual and logistical priorities. (PP)
