Srinagar, Jun 17 (PP): A devastating fire broke out late Tuesday night in Pamposh Colony, Noorbagh area of central Kashmir’s Srinagar district, severely damaging at least thirteen residential structures.
An official from the Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) told news agency Prism Post (PP) that the fire started around 10:35 PM. Responding promptly, firefighting teams reached the location within a minute to begin containment efforts.
The inferno engulfed two double-storey houses, five single-storey houses, and six sheds made of Galvanized Corrugated Iron (GCI) sheets. According to the official, the sheds and their contents were completely destroyed. The single-storey homes suffered extensive damage to roofs, ceilings, doors, windows, and belongings, while one side of the double-storey houses was also affected. Surrounding structures sustained indirect damage from heat, smoke, and water.
Units from F&ES Headquarters, Safakadal, SH Pora, MR Guni, Mujgund, and Babademb stations worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames. Despite the intensity of the blaze, no injuries or casualties were reported.
The police have taken cognizance of the incident and are investigating the cause of the fire, which remains unknown at this time. Residents have expressed gratitude that no lives were lost, though the extent of property damage is substantial.
The incident has raised concerns about fire safety measures in densely populated areas, especially where structures are made of highly flammable materials like GCI sheets. Local authorities are expected to provide assistance to the affected families in the coming days. (PP)
