Srinagar, Jun 26 (PP): The crescent marking the beginning of Muharram-ul-Haram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, was sighted in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday evening. Grand Mufti Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam Farooqi announced that Friday, June 27, will be the first day of the new Islamic year, 1447 AH.
Speaking to the news agency Prism Post (PP), the Grand Mufti said, “The Islamic New Year will start tomorrow, Friday, June 27, and the significant day of Ashura will be observed on Sunday, July 6, 2025.”
Muharram holds immense spiritual and historical significance in Islam. The 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, is a day of mourning and reflection for Muslims, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), at the Battle of Karbala.
The new Islamic year, 1447 AH, begins with the sighting of the crescent, ushering in a time for spiritual renewal and reflection. (PP)
